Workshop Details

This intro workshop will walk you through four of the basic skills of forging: drawing, upsetting, twisting, and punching which can be combined to create thousands of simple blacksmithing projects.

You will then heat and hit some steel! Introductory projects will include a bottle opener or a pair of tongs.

"Introduction to Blacksmithing" is a 2.5 to 3 Hour session. No experience is necessary. Beginners are encouraged to attend! This program takes place at MakerspaceCT in Hartford, CT. Check below for available sessions.

Course Objectives

Forge Safety

Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the safety procedures of the forge area.

Forge Tools
2

Understand the function, purpose, and proper use of the tools of the forge area.

Forging Techniques
3

Develop a baseline confidence using the tools and the basic techniques of forging.

Please note that MakerspaceCT's Metal Shop is an 18+ space.

IMPORTANT! METAL SHOP DRESS CODE

Please wear natural fiber clothing, long pants and closed-toed leather shoes. No sandals, no synthetic fabrics. Long hair must be tied back.

For your safety, we provide welding jackets, gloves, hearing protection, respirators and safety glasses. You are welcome to bring your own protective gear if you prefer.
