CNC Machining + HAAS Certificate for Complete Beginners (Thursday, May 07, 2026)

Prerequisites:
Participants must complete the HAAS Basic Mill Operation online course prior to the session. Completion of this course, combined with the in-person training, qualifies participants to receive a HAAS Basic Mill Certificate. Basic computer skills are required; no prior CNC experience is necessary.

Overview:

This two-part workshop is designed for complete beginners and provides a thorough, hands-on introduction to operating a HAAS CNC mill. Guided by a certified instructor, you will build foundational skills across both sessions and leave with the confidence to safely set up and run a CNC machine.

Session 1, Machine Familiarization and Setup (3 hours): Get introduced to the HAAS CNC mill, covering machine components, basic safety, control panel navigation, and powering up and homing the machine. Learn how to load tooling, set tool and work offsets, and understand the role of feeds and speeds in CNC operation.

Session 2, Running Programs and Machine Operation (3 hours): Build on Session 1 by loading and executing a CNC program, performing first-article inspection, and learning proper machine cleanup procedures. By the end of this session, you will have run a complete CNC cycle from start to finish under instructor supervision.

Intro to Wood CNC with Matt (2 Session Course) (Tuesday, May 12, 2026)

CNC routers are a powerful tool in any modern maker’s arsenal. They can be used to cut, carve and shape many materials including wood, plastics, foam, cardboard, non-ferrous metals and many more. They are quite often able to produce parts more accurately and efficiently than traditional manual processes freeing up makers to design, assemble and create more. This course is specific to the Techno Titan CNC at MakerspaceCT, but many of the principles covered apply to CNC routing on any machine.

This course is taught in two parts:

VCarve Pro software: design and toolpathing

Running a job on the CNC: bit selection & feeds and speeds

Schedule for Session 1:

All students will be using provided PCs with VCarve Pro loaded on it as the instructor demonstrates in real time how to design in VCarve Pro

We will discuss machine settings, where to set datum/zero points, and an overview of VCarve Pro's tools

We will then learn how to make basic shapes

Next will be learning the toolpath functions & their uses

Session 2: Running a job on the CNC

We will go back to the CNC machine & each student will be shown how to save their toolpaths to a file that each will run on the CNC to make their own shapes out of plywood (welcome to bring your own FLAT wood)

Each student will get comfortable on how to secure their work to workbed & zeroing each tool & material. Load file into pendant & run their program to make a sign.

Instructor may adapt the class to the needs of the individuals based on experience levels.

All students are encouraged to stay the entire time as there will be many questions asked along the way. CNCs are big, powerful & intimidating and the best way to get comfortable using them is by understanding your files & first hand experience.

BEFORE TAKING THE CLASS:

Open Onshape Workshop (Tuesday, May 12, 2026)

Open Onshape is a casual, drop-in help session for makers working on their own Onshape projects.

Bring your questions, stuck points, half-finished models, or design challenges. This is dedicated time to get one-on-one guidance, troubleshoot issues, refine modeling strategies, or learn more efficient workflows inside Onshape.

This is not a structured class and does not replace Intro to Onshape. If you're brand new to Onshape and need foundational instruction, the Intro class is the better starting point. Open Onshape is best suited for members who are already working in Onshape and want targeted help moving their projects forward.

No formal lesson. No set curriculum. Just focused support when you need it.

Drop in. Ask questions. Keep building.

Intro to Wood CNC with Matt (2 Session Course) (Tuesday, May 26, 2026)

Intro to Wood CNC with Matt (2 Session Course) (Thursday, May 28, 2026)
